The Child Who Doesn't Speak

Understanding and Supporting Children with Selective Mutism

By Heidi Omdal

How should teachers and parents react when a child consistently does not speak in certain situations when speech is expected? This dissertation examines 'selective mutism' from a twofold approach. It observes everyday interactions between children with selective mutism, and with the other children and adults in schools and homes. The book also contains interviews with former selectively mute adults, selectively mute children, along with parents and teachers. The book focuses on various questions, including: What seems to be the meaning of silence from the child's own perspective and from the perspectives of other children and adults? How did teachers succeed in encouraging communication? What are the interactions that discourage children to speak and therefore not participate in kindergarten and school? Dissertation.
