Sociology and Environmental Sustainability

A Study of Fragile Ecology, Health Risks and Population Pangs

By Rani Mehta

Environmental sustainability is a matter of grave concern. Man, through his understanding and reasoning capabilities, has succeeded in harnessing his environment. However, man as a species is also responsible for environmental degradation and deterioration by over utilizing the planet's resources. This has caused an imbalance in the environment and has made the ecology fragile. Therefore, it is necessary to restore and protect the resources in order to provide an ecological balance for environmental sustainability. In the context of a developing nation like India, this paradigm of development has posed greater challenges as the country does not have adequate technologies to take care of environmental problems. Additionally, India has encountered the major problem of population explosion which has made the country vulnerable to greater health risks and other increasing population pangs. This book discusses issues related to the different dimensions of environment, health, and population in India, and suggests a viable alternative for sustainable development based on participatory approach and having roots in our cultural ethos.
