Proceedings of a seminar held on 6-7 March 1991. Although the badger is Ireland's largest extant carnivore, less than five scientific publications on the biology of this animal in Ireland have been published in the last two decades. This seminar addresses this deficiency in that it brings together all groups currently carrying out research on the badger in this country. It is intended, by placing available information in the public domain, to identify where further information is required and to encourage discussion and collaboration between interested partners so that further research is stimulated. Some of the reports concern work in progress. These are included because, as they necessarily represent longer-term studies, it is appropriate that the background and hypotheses under investigation be clearly stated and, more importantly, how the results are to analysed and the time-scale involved.
