Carysfort Press was formed in the summer of 1998 and is considered the leading documenter of contemporary Irish theatre in Irish publishing. It has received annual funding from the Arts Council of Ireland.

The directors believe that drama plays an ever-increasing role in today’s society and that enjoyment of the theatre - both professional and amateur - plays a central part in Irish culture.

The Press produces high quality publications, which are written and edited by leading academics and theatre practitioners from Ireland, North America and the United Kingdom. Its publications include not only critical perspectives on Irish theatre, but also original works by playwrights such as Tom Murphy, widely used translations of German plays by Büchner, Wedekind and Wijkmark and seminal works on music, art, philosophy and the humanities.
