Conferences - Garant Publishers - Holodomor

What we've been up to lately...

Conference and more conferences!  Hart Publishing, Intersentia, and Eleven International Publishing attended the conference of the American Society of International Law which was holding a joint meeting with the International Law Association in Washington, DC in April. The conference was hugely busy for these publishers. All three publishers produce titles on many aspects of International law, from human rights to trade law. They displayed such titles as The South China Sea Arbitration: A Chinese Perspective from Hart, and Global Perspectives on ADR from Intersentia, and Towards Sustainability: Major Challenges for Corporate Law, Corporate Governance and Regulation from Eleven.

Also in April, ISBS staff attended the Midwest Political Science Association in Chicago, representing books from over 20 presses we distribute. Conversations with attendees were lively. We exhibited such publishers as Barbara Budrich and their title Participatory Democratic Innovations in Europe: Improving the Quality of Democracy? and Nomos Publishers with Economization versus Power Ambitions: Rethinking Russia's Policy towards Post-Soviet States. We displayed books discussing politics worldwide, from Africa to China to the Scandinavian countries.

In other news ...

Ukraine and the conflict with Russia is an uneasy topic of this moment. For a historical and political perspective on the relations between these countries in the early 20th century, it is worth reading Gareth Jones: Eyewitness to the Holodomor. This is the first academic study of Gareth Jones, who travelled to Russia as a foreign affairs adviser to David Lloyd George and Ivy Lee, and his attempts to gain public and international recognition of the horror of the Holodomor.  The Holodomor holocaust was the Soviet government-induced famine in the early 1930s which killed millions of Ukrainians. Upon publishing articles on the Holodomor in UK and US newspapers, Jones's credibility and integrity were immediately attacked and denigrated by the Soviet government. This book is published by Welsh Academic Press.
